CELEBRATING A MASTER WORDSMITH AND A TRANSFORMATIVE LEADER IN THE NATIONAL POLICE SERVICE.
Harriet Tubman, an American abolitionist, and political activist stated ‘Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.’ This is an endorsement of the words of the infamous American Baptist minister and activist, Martin Luther King Jr who posited ‘If you can’t fly then run if you can’t run then walk if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.’
The aforementioned intellectual quotes are perfectly epitomized by one of our own Mr. Jared Ojuok, HSC who is a Superintendent of Police (SP) and is currently deployed as the Public Information Officer in the Office of the Deputy Inspector General, Kenya Police Service. He is a distinguished scholar, an astute communicator, a transformative leader, and a family man.
Renowned for his academic excellence, Mr. Ojuok, SP holds a Master of Business Administration, Strategic Management (MBA) from Kenyatta University, a Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Nairobi, and undertook a CPA (Certified Public Accountant) course at the then Kenya College of Accountancy (KCA). He is an alumnus of Otel Primary School and Homa Bay High School where is fondly revered for his incredible brilliance, discipline, respect, and resilience.
The dedicated and assiduous security professional was enlisted in the National Police Service and graduated as a Police Constable after undergoing rigorous recruit training at the renowned National Police College – Embakasi ‘B’ Campus, formerly known as the General Service Unit (GSU) Training School.
The elite GSU officer is renowned for devising crime prevention techniques, and meticulously executing security operations during his service as a Platoon Commander in Mt. Elgon, Kibish, Mokowe, and Transmara. He has worked in various commands and critical leadership positions including as the OC Housing, as a senior officer at the Directorate of Corporate Communication, and as a Public Relations Officer reminisced for his excellent editorial prowess, especially in the production of the legendary Kenya Police Review Magazine.
As a result of his commitment, ingenuity, and academic status, Mr. Ojuok, SP, was promoted from a Constable to the ranks of Corporal, Inspector of Police, Chief Inspector, and Assistant Superintendent of Police. He served with utmost professionalism, honesty, and integrity. Later, he was promoted to the current rank of Superintendent of Police.
In his pursuit of more professional knowledge and skills, Mr. Ojuok, SP, has trained extensively locally and globally. He successfully undertook the coveted National Security Course at the Galilee International Management Institute in Israel, a Police Management Course at the International Institute of the Histadrut in Tel Aviv-Yafo, also in Israel, and an Advanced Methods of Crime Investigations Course at the National Forensic Sciences University in Gujarat, India.
As a transformative leader, Mr. Ojuok, SP was instrumental in the establishment of the Kenya Police Football Club, being the first Secretary-General who later became the Treasurer. He successfully steered the team to a trajectory of success that culminated in the Police FC joining the prestigious Kenya Premier League.
Mr. Ojuok, SP is the National Secretary-General of the International Police Association (IPA), Kenya Section. As a result of his impeccable leadership skills, the Association has grown in leaps and bounds. Locally, the International Police Association has been involved in numerous programs targeting vulnerable populations, and environmental conservation as part of the Association’s Corporate Social Responsibility strategies.
At the height of the COVID-19 lockdown, the association in partnership with local churches relentlessly ran a weekly program of giving donations of food rations to vulnerable families in Nairobi. The Association has also been distributing books and toiletries to Children’s homes and schools across Kenya. Additionally, IPA in partnership with the National Police Service donated Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to Police officers serving across the country.
On environmental conservation, the association in partnership with KEFRI, County Governments, Corporations, and individual citizens, successfully organized and realized the planting of 5,300,000 seedlings in a nationwide project that aims to create common forums, whereby the police and the public come together in the spirit of partnership and address common security challenges in a friendly environment consistent with the association’s motto of Servo per Amikeko, translated from Esperanto means Service Through Friendship.
A writer par excellence, Mr. Ojuok, SP wrote his inaugural fascinating novel titled ‘When the Ancient Tree Falls.’ The series of stories narrated through the thirteen chapters in the book highlight the various cultural practices among the Luo people. The novel is set in a remote Kenyan village and depicts the traditional political, socio-cultural, and economic life of the Luo community. The story is about the accomplishments of Ngode Aganyo, a pre-colonial community leader in the land of Mumbo, a confederation of six related clans. He was a great warrior and a judicious leader who led his clan with love and firmness which made him the epitome of good morals and economic attainment within his community.
His motivation to write the book was informed by the African proverb, “A man who sees a hen scattering excrement should stop it, for who knows who will eat the leg?†from a security perspective, Mr. Ojuok, SP believes that teaching our young generation the traditional values and value systems will create a more cohesive Kenyan society where good morals will be upheld, virtues of honesty, respect for seniors, and kinship ties will also be observed. Society will respect women and children and participate jointly in bringing up a successor generation that will carry forward the Kenyan culture, the spirit of our people informed by common belief systems.
As a communication enthusiast Mr. Ojuok, SP hopes to write more books that shall be read by schoolchildren across the globe to expose the world to the unique Kenyan talent, and more importantly to re-introduce the African cultural concepts to the public psyche.
In recognition of his dedicated and selfless service to the country, Mr. Jared Ojuok, SP was conferred with the Head of State’s Commendation (HSC) award on 12th December 2020 by H.E. Uhuru Kenyatta, CGH, the President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-In-Chief of the Kenya Defense Forces.
The National Police Service (NPS) takes pride in Mr. Jared Ojuok, HSC, SP for his transformative and proactive policing initiative geared toward promoting a positive relationship between police and the public. He is a trailblazer and an inspiration to fellow police officers. His resoluteness in promoting Community Policing, and enforcement of law and order has immensely contributed to the maintenance of peace and security in Kenya. We wish him well as he steadily rises to the top echelons of the Police Service.
