The Manchester United attacker, 37, was rested in Thursday’s 1-1 draw with Spain but three nights later extended his world-record haul of international goals to 117.

Real Betis midfielder William Carvalho slotted a simple opener early on before Ronaldo shot home on 35 and 39 minutes.

Bernardo Silva then cleverly teed up Manchester City team-mate Joao Cancelo for Portugal’s fourth goal midway through a second-half cruise.

New Old Trafford boss Erik ten Hag insists he’ll be ‘excited’ to work with legend Ronaldo.

And the former Real Madrid hero showed why as he was again the main man in Lisbon.

Switzerland began brightly enough, even having a Haris Seferovic opener scrubbed off by VAR for handball.

But Carvalho soon transformed the match with his breakthrough goal.

He rolled the ball home after keeper Gregor Kobel parried Ronaldo’s free-kick straight to him.

Portugal took charge and, unsurprisingly, it was Ron who made their extra class pay.

The ex-Juventus superstar doubled their lead, cleverly supplied by Liverpool winger Diogo Jota.

And Ronaldo’s poaching instincts swiftly made it 3-0.

But he blew the chance of a seven-minute hat-trick with a glaring miss from close in.

Cancelo struck on 68 minutes to reward Portugal’s domination.

But Ronaldo was denied a treble once more, this time when his free-kick was brilliantly saved by Dortmund keeper Kobel.

So he had to settle for two goals that took him eight clear of the 109 by Iran’s Ali Daei in the all-time list of international scorers.
