While Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party presidential candidate Raila Amollo Odinga spent a good part of Sunday cultivating friendship with the Akorino Church faithful marking their centenary at Kasarani Gymnasium, another presidential candidate Prof George Wajackoyah had different ideas.

Wajackoyah feels the mushrooming of churches within residential areas interferes with social order and regulations must be put in place.

A good way of regulating churches Wajackoyah suggests is to pass legislation to ensure each church sponsors 500 students from basic to higher education. This measure will certainly deter hapless organizations that cannot support themselves from springing up all over.

Churches within residential areas contribute a lot to noise pollution as they compete to outdo each other by creating a cacophonous din in the excuse of praise and worship.

As one observer commented: “The easiest way to tell if you live in a shitty neighborhood or cool neighborhood is the number of churches per kilometer radius. The higher the number the shitty the hood, the lower the number the cooler the hood but most of you are not ready to notice this.”

Prof. George Wajackoyah.

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) which is taxed with the regulation of noise pollution has largely been a toothless watchdog.

Meanwhile, the debate to have income generated by churches subjected to taxation has been thrown out in the national assembly severally whenever it reared its head. Preachers make a lot of unregulated income from unverifiable sources such as tithing, gifts of goodwill, and sponsors based outside Kenya.

Nairobi slums are a veritable Babel each Sunday.

Shining a spotlight on this irregular income could cause the political class dearly as churchgoers are the same people who turn out to cast the ballot.

Do you agree with Mr. Wajackoya?
