Dear Aunty Magda: Just Turned 52 And Sex With My Husband Is Painful, Awkward

Dear Aunty Magda,

I’m a professional woman who just turned 54. Lately, sex with my husband has become odious and painful.

We have been married for thirty-seven years and enjoyed ordinary sex life, meeting twice or thrice a week.

I discovered that lately the thrill of having sex is gone and I’m all sore after the fact. My husband is 56 and he is not showing signs of slowing down.

I’m embarrassed to tell him although my disinterest and the fact that I try as much as possible to avoid sex are showing.

I don’t want to appear as if am over-the-board, age-wise.

E.N. — Alupe.

Aunty Magda Replies:-

Dear Esther,

You are not over-the-board as you harshly put it. No woman ever gets there.

At 52 you paint the perfect picture of a woman in early menopause. You didn’t mention whether you are seeing your periods or not, but overall I can assure you the signs are normal for that age.

Discomfiture while having intercourse at an advanced age is caused by diminishing levels of estrogen. At menopause a woman becomes short of the female hormonal lubricants, leading to pain at penetration.

You could try the use of cosmetic lubricants, relieve yourself of anxiety, and when this does not help talk to your husband honestly about it.

If the condition persists, however, you could together visit a medical practitioner.
