About 20 Members of Parliament allied to Azimio have camped outside Kiambu Police Station demanding the release of Leader of Minority in Parliament Opiyo Wandayi and his Senate colleague Stewart Madzayo.
Leading the demonstrators was Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna in tandem with parliamentarians and MCAs drawn from across the country.
By noon the whereabouts of Azimio leader Raila Amollo Odinga were yet-to-be-disclosed several hours after the 20 March Maandamano which he called kicked off.
Lawyer Danstan Omari who is also camped outside Kiambu Police Station called it an abuse of power that someone arrested on Wabera Street, Nairobi should be shuttled to Kiambu Police Station without any good reason.
Also speaking outside the Police Station Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo disclosed that the number of legislators in police custody had now risen to four. Likoni MP Mishi Mboko said her driver and several civilians have also been arrested.
Initially, it was only pockets of demonstrators chanting anti-Ruto choruses in Kisumu and Nairobi but the protests have spilled over with Eldoret, Kitale, and Murang’a recording large turnouts.
One protestor in Nairobi’s CBD was quoted by AFP as saying that they will camp in the city until police run out of teargas. This was following ugly scenes on Ngong Road and Kibera where demonstrators have lit bonfires using tires to blockade roads.
The police who arrested the two leaders of Parliament had initially detained them at Central Police Station where demonstrators threatened to overrun the station forcing them to transfer the two to Kiambu.
The situation is relatively calm in other parts of Nairobi although heavy police presence is evident everywhere.
Raila joins demos on Valley Road.
Meanwhile, the latest reports are that Azimio leaders including Raila Odinga have been blocked from accessing Serena Hotel.
The roads here have been blocked and water cannons are at full blast on the protestors.
The Azimio convoy including Raila has retreated to Valley Road.
