Fear of Cholera Outbreak in Siaya School As Residents Blame MP Atandi for Prioritizing Burials

Residents of North Alego Ward in Siaya County have raised a public outcry over the neglect of Aluny Primary School situated in the Alego-Usonga Constituency by their Member of Parliament.

According to the residents, the last government-funded aid to the school was a two-roomed classroom constructed using NG-CDF funds over fifteen years ago when Edwin Ochieng Yinda was the area Member of Parliament.

The residents now claim that area MP Samuel Onunga Atandi whose home is in the vicinity of the school has turned a deaf ear to requests for NG-CDF funding and instead concentrated on providing a coffin and other burial expenses whenever a death occurs in the area.

North Alego Ward MCA Vincent Odawa has also come under fire for working in cahoots with the MP in efforts to divert development projects away from Aluny Primary School.

The school is one of the largest public primary schools in North Alego with a pupil population of close to 500. It serves the villages of Kamagoye, Nyioro Ugoha, Karapul and the surrounding area.

Due to water scarcity, the decrepit school latrines now pose a serious health hazard, especially with the onset of the long rains.

A similar situation prevails in many other primary schools in Alego-Usonga Constituency such as Goro and Uwasi Primary Schools in Usonga Ward. Mr. Sylvester Madialo the area MCA for Usonga is known to be vocal and full of energising rhetoric on the floor of the assembly but with very little tangible results on the ground.

Samuel Onunga Atandi is credited with the construction of a model learning centre at Karapul Primary School and has been using the same to whitewash his deficiencies in addressing the poor equipping of primary schools in the Constituency.

The locals have now appealed to media outlets to air their plight before a large number of pupils get exposed to Cholera.
