Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) Chairperson Bishop David Oginde has expressed confidence in the impending arrest and formal charges of corruption and abuse of office against former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Ambetsa Oparanya.
Oginde informed the National Dialogue Committee (NDC) that EACC had concluded its investigations into Oparanya nearly a month after his arrest. Oparanya, an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) deputy party leader, faced accusations of misappropriating Ksh1.3 billion during his tenure as Kakamega governor from 2013 to 2022.
After the finalizing of the investigations, the EACC has now handed over the case file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) with hopes of proceeding to prosecution.
Oginde emphasized the thoroughness of EACC’s investigations and highlighted their success rate in cases forwarded to the ODPP. He criticized ODM for sensationalizing the case against Oparanya and denied allegations of EACC weaponizing the fight against corruption, asserting that their investigations were impartial.
Additionally, Bishop Oginde revealed that nine current and former governors, including Mike Sonko (Nairobi) and Okoth Obado (Migori), have pending graft cases.
