Salome Bukachi, a University of Nairobi (UoN) scholar, has joined a group of 28 eminent commissioners from around the world who are working to prevent the next pandemic.
The group, which includes experts from Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and North America, is part of the Lancet Commission on Prevention of Viral Spillover, a project supported by the World Health Organization (WHO).
The project estimates that an annual investment of $41.6 billion (Sh6 trillion) is needed to achieve its goal of averting future outbreaks of zoonotic diseases.
Bukachi, an associate professor at the UoN’s Institute of Anthropology, Gender and African Studies, has a medical anthropology background with a focus on infectious diseases.
