Airlines’ Amazing New Offer for the Cost of Flight from Nairobi to New Migori Airstrip

On Wednesday, September 13, a maiden commercial plane touched down at the officially opened Lichota Airstrip in Migori County.

This was a historical moment for the locals who are set to witness growth in the tourism sector given the strategic location of the county that borders Tanzania near the Serengeti, known for the wildebeest migration.

On the maiden flight by Skyward Express, an Airline that has been operating in the country for 10 years now, were Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, Ida Odinga, the wife of Opposition leader Raila Odinga, Agnes Ochillo, the first lady of Migori county among others.

With this development, Migori residents who have been spending up to seven hours to reach Nairobi by bus for KSh 1,400 will only take less than an hour to access Kenya’s capital by air.

How far is Migori from Nairobi?
According to Travelmath.com, it takes a plane flying at an average of 500 miles per hour  about 50 minutes to travel from Nairobi to Migori. About six hours saved.

Skyward Chairman Captain Mohamed Abdi said that they will be having flights from Wilson Airport, Nairobi, to Lichota airstrip in Migori and back three days a week.

“We are happy to be in Migori. We will be having three flights every week on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Tickets will cost our clients only KSh 8,600 per flight. I am excited to witness this milestone and looking forward to grow together with Migori.

“We are here to reduce travel hours and encourage you to use Skyward as it is safe and convenient for all our customers,” said Abdi.
Even better, Murkomen said the government aims to expand the facility’s space from 1.7 hectares to two hectares, thus expanding the terminal to make the airstrip flexible to operate as an airport.

This, he said, would enable the airstrip to be able to handle cargo flights and grow business in the county and neighbouring counties.

Governor Ochillo Ayacko said he had agreed with the airline that county executive officials would fly skyward as part of the commitments to grow together.

Flights to Maasai Mara and Serengeti
Nyatike MP Tom Odege called on the national government to help improve roads around the facility to ease transport activities.

“For us to make good use of this facility we need a smooth transport connection to Maasai Mara and Serengeti. This will be achieved with collaboration between the national government and the counties,” Odege said.
Mrs Ochillo was among the passengers on the maiden flight and was full of praises for the domestic carrier.

“The flight was one of the smoothest I have ever had. The crew are passionate and caring and it’s encouraging that more job opportunities will be created by the airline and the airstrip,” Ochillo added.

Locals told reporters that they would be glad if they would be prioritised whenever job opportunities at the facility arose.

“We as the sons and daughters of this area request that we’ll be prioritised whenever opportunities come by so that we can also improve our livelihoods,” said Vincent Ouma.

Born in Migori, Ida was happy to witness the development and urged the locals to seize business opportunities and grow financially.
