Lately, the political arena in Kenya has stood out for showcasing several academic dwarfs who have surprisingly had sterling political careers. From the indubitable Mike Mbuvi Sonko to Ferdinand Waititu and Oscar Sudi, the motley collection of buffoonery has been startling.

Kenya’s top three female representatives, however, make up a decidedly impressive lot.

1. Dr.Joyce Atieno Osogo Bensouda
Dr. Joyce Osogo famously Known as Bensouda is a Kenyan vocal politician currently serving as the Homabay Woman Representative. She clinched the seat in the 2022 General Elections through an ODM Party ticket. The seat was previously held by Gladys Atieno Nyasuna Wanga who is now the Homabay County Governor.

Bensouda is arguably the most learned Woman Representative in the country.

According to trusted sources, she holds a PhD in Project Planning and Management, a Masters Degree in Project Planning and Management, MA PPM, and a Bachelors Degree in Education (Arts- Geography and History) from the University of Nairobi. She also has a Certificate in Computer Applications and SPSS from KCA University.

She is serving as Woman Representative for her second term having been first elected in the 2017 General Elections and retaining the same seat in 2022.

Dr Irene Kasalu combines beauty and brains in amazing proportions. She justifiably joins the ranks of the most educated female representatives in Kenya.

According to trusted sources Irene holds a PhD in Mathematics from Leicester University in the United Kingdom. She also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Actuarial Science and a Master of Science in Finance from the University of Nairobi.

Before making her foray into politics she worked as a Finance and Mathematics Lecturer at Meru University of Science & Technology. In 2017 she quit her job as a lecturer to contest for the Kitui County Woman Representative seat which she comfortably won.

3. Dr. Christine Ombaka.
Dr. Christine Ombaka is another Kenyan Politician who stands out as having broken the frontiers of academia. She is a three-term Siaya County  Woman Representative.

She was first elected as the Siaya county Woman Representative in the 2013 General Elections, was re-elected in 2017 and was handed an ODM Party direct nomination in 2022 where she romped home against a weak field of rivals.

Dr Ombaka is not only among the highly educated female representatives but also belongs to a select group of Kenya’s most influential female politicians.

Before joining the murky world of politics, Dr Ombaka had worked in the world of academia for close to 30 years.

Dr Ombaka graduated with a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Nairobi in 1977. Consequently, she set off on a long teaching career, rising through the ranks to the position of Principal of Sinyolo Girls High School, Kisumu.

In 1990, she won a scholarship and joined the University of Lancaster, UK for a Master of Linguistics and Communication degree. She would later graduate with a Doctorate in Linguistics and Communication from the Irish International University.
