On the evening of October 14, 2023 Cabinet Secretary for Energy Davis Chirchir posted his reasons online on why the government has affected the latest fuel prices increase.
Mr. Chirchir claimed the increase in fuel prices has been necessitated by shutting down of refineries in the middle East.
He also blamed the Russia-Ukraine war as playing a major role in fuel prices determination as it had a negative effect on the fuel supply chain.
“We have seen refineries in the Middle East shut down for maintenance, the Russia-Ukraine conflict has had a negative effect on the fuel supply chain and we have also seen a cut in production by OPEC countries.”, the CS said.
The statement was an attempt to explain the latest fuel prices review as released by Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) despite the existence of a government to government fuel deal that president William Ruto inked month’s ago.
The price of petrol at the pump now ranges from between KES 205 to 215 with diesel and kerosene all similarly adjusted.
In the meantime, Azimio la Umoja one Kenya Coalition leaders led by Ugunja Constituency Member of Parliament Hon James Opiyo Wandayi has called out Ruto’s government for exploiting Kenyans by regularly increasing fuel prices.
Speaking in Kitui during the thanksgiving ceremony for Senator Enock Wambua, Opiyo Wandayi claimed that Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza government had failed to defend the common man.
