Angolan President João Lourenço who arrived in the country on Thursday specifically to attend Kenya’s 60th Mashujaa Day Celebrations has made a no show at Kericho Green Stadium.

Hours before Kenya celebrated Mashujaa Day, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi received Angola President João Lourenço together with the First Lady Ana Dias Lourenço.

Fast forward 15 hours later and President Lourenço, who had come to grace Kenya’s 60th Mashujaa Day celebrations was conspicuously missing at the event graced by President William Ruto, and his senior government officials.

In his place was Ambassador António Tete who did not reveal the reason why the president was missing.

“On behalf of President João Lourenço I would first like to convey his apologies. He would have loved to be here but for unforeseen reasons, he couldn’t make it to Kericho. He sends you very warm greetings, thanking for the warm reception we always have been granted whenever we come to Kenya,” said Ambassador Tete.

The Kenyan government has yet to explain why President Lourenço did not show up for Mashujaa Day celebrations despite being in Nairobi.

On Thursday evening, Musalia’s X account announced Lourenço’s arrival.

“Today, I had the honor and privilege of receiving His Excellency João Lourenço, the President of the Republic of Angola, and Her Excellency Ana Dias Lourenço, the First Lady of the Republic of Angola, as they arrived in our country for a two-day state visit,” he tweeted.

“During the visit, H.E. Lourenço will engage in a bilateral meeting with H.E President William Ruto and will also be the Chief Guest at the Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kericho County.”
