Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has expressed satisfaction moments after Kericho Green Stadium was renamed in the memory of the late Wilson Kiprugut Chumo.
President William Ruto Friday confirmed the changes during this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations at the particular stadium in Kericho.
The sports CS further described the late Kiprugut Chumo as Kenya’s John the Baptist as he was the first athlete to win an Olympic medal for Kenya.
“Delighted for the renaming of Kericho Green Stadium in the memory of the late Wilson Kiprugut arap Chumo, without a doubt Kenya’s Athletics “John the Baptist.”
Chumo passed away last year aged 84 and laid to rest on 12 November 2022 in Kipchebor village of Ainamoi Constituency, Kericho County.
The late phenomenally blazed the trail by winning independent Kenya’s first ever medal, bronze in 800m at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics right in the heat of the country’s independence pride.
“We once again celebrate this fine hero and restate government’s commitment to honour and take better care of both our active and retired sportspersons who brand Kenya better than anyone or anything else. Fly the Kenyan flag with pride and valour, confident that your country cherishes and honours you. We Walk our Talk,” Namwamba added.
