Following a meeting with officials from Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), Homabay Governor Gladys Atieno Nyasuna Wanga on Friday declared that Mokwa had been certified fit for human consumption.
Wanga broken her silence Friday evening concerning the Kigoto Maize Milling Plant which produces maize flour packaged as Mokwa which was recently flagged as having high levels of aflatoxin by KEBS.
“Only a few bales in the stock had shown a high aflatoxin content but were never released to the market,” the Governor is reported to have said.
Wanga further clarified that the Milling Company complied with all the KEBS guidelines and requirements and refuted rumours of potential closure and banning of the company products.
She admitted that a few bales were found with aflatoxin but she clarified that the bales were not released to the market.
The Kigoto Maize Milling Plant was officially opened by the former Prime Ministe Rt Hon Raila Amollo Odinga on November 4, 2022.
The plant aims to ensure that residents of Homabay have access to affordable, high-quality sifted and fortified maize flour products.
