Kenya’s Top Performing Governors Ranked

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga have been named the best-performing governors in the country by research company Infotrak.

According to a survey by Infotrak, the two governors emerged top in a list of top 25 governors, where they scored an average of 70 percent each. The research firm noted that participants in the survey ranked the two in service delivery.

In a report released on Tuesday, West Pokot Governor Simon Kachapin came in third with 67 percent, while Simba Arati (Kisii), Irungu Kang’ata (Murang’a), Jeremiah Lomurkai (Turkana) and Mutula Kilonzo (Makueni) tied at position four with 64 percent.

Wesley Rotich (Elgeyo Marakwet), Kawira Mwangaza (Meru), and Julius Malombe (Kitui) ranked eighth with 63%. Cecily Mbarire (Embu) and Patrick Olentuntu (Narok) were 11th with 62 percent.

The survey dubbed CountyTrak was conducted between July – September 2023, with a sample of 58,748 people from all 47 counties. The first survey was conducted between July and August 2023 involving 36,200 participants.

“The second survey involving 22,500 participants was conducted to boost the sample size so that each subcounty had at least 200 respondents,” Infotrak said.

Anyang Nyong’o (Kisumu), Wavinya Ndeti (Machakos), Muthomi Njuki (Tharaka Nithi), and Mohamed Khalif (Mandera) were 13th with 61%. Jonathan Leleliit (Samburu), Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga), and Mutahi Kahiga (Nyeri) ranked 17th with 59%.

Ken Lusaka of Bungoma ranked 20th with 58 percent while Mombasa and Kilifi, both from the Coast region ranked position 21 with 57 percent. Governors Jonathan Bii (Uasin Gishu), Johnson Sakaja (Nairobi), Wilber Ottichilo (Vihiga), and Fernandes Barasa (Kakamega) closed the top 25 with 56 percent.

The survey poll also rated governors who had improved from the past with Governor Gladys Wanga moving from position 45 to position 1 while her Trans Nzoia Counterpart George Natembeya moved from 42 to 1. Embattled Meru Governor Kawira MwAngaza moved from 38 to 8 in the ranking despite her tribulations.

“A lot of women governors are doing well because the majority of female governors are leading in the list of top 25 performing governors. They are quite effective as administrators,” Ambitho added.
