Following the latest presidential appointments, Professor Lukoye Atwoli will sit on the Board of Directors of the Mathari National Teaching and Referral Hospital as its non-executive chairperson.
President William Ruto sanctioned Atwoli’s appointment to the post in a Gazette Notice dated October 17.
He would be occupying the post for three years.
Who is Lukoye Atwoli?
Lukoye is a reputed doctor of psychiatry with experience spanning over two decades, having traversed various facets of the medical field.
Owing to his expertise in mental matters, he has presumably been deemed the best fit for the post at the Mathari Hospital, the only public psychiatric facility in Kenya.
He is a dean at Aga Khan University Medical College, East Africa.
The father of four holds a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from Moi University.
He undertook his residency (Master of Medicine) in Psychiatry at the University of Nairobi before acquiring his professorship from South Africa’s University of Cape Town, where he obtained a PhD from the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health.
Per his profile, Lukoye is hailed as a significant influencer of mental health policy in Kenya and the continent.
Besides being a member of the World Health Organisation (WHO)’s World Mental Health Surveys Consortium, he takes pride in leading and participating in mental health research locally and beyond.
The 45-year-old is the son of the son of outspoken Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) secretary-general Francis Atwoli.
Just like his activist father, Lukoye is known to be a loud voice in the health sector.
