Dar-es-salaam Regional Commander Mr. Chalamila yesterday led a raid into the Kinondoni red light District in which he ordered the destruction of brothels.

The operation to remove the eyesore Kinondoni red light District where prostitution has been carried out in very filthy surroundings appears to have the blessings of President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Earlier on the regional commander issued evacuation directives to the hundreds of prostitutes who plied their trade in the slum.

According to our Dar-es-salaam reporter the operation has met resistance from civil rights activists who claim the Government should have provided alternative sources of employment to the women before moving them.

“Those opposing the move are ignorant of the fact that some of the women who sell themselves here are in marriages and the need to make a quick buck has driven them into spreading all manner of disease and filth,” said RC Chalamila, adding “We shall not stand this. When it comes to matters of giving account over the safety standards of the district the buck squarely stops at my desk. This structures will be gone in a week.”
