Tragedy struck early Wednesday afternoon as a lorry rammed into Traders in the busy Akala Open Air Market in Gem Constituency of Siaya County.
One fatality was recorded on the scene while five traders were rushed to Siaya Referral Hospital after sustaining life-threatening injuries. Several others were taken to Bondo sub-County Hospital with manageable injuries.
Governor Orengo immediately issued a statement on his Twitter page over the unfortunate incident.
“While attending a Governor’s retreat in Keekorok in Maasai Mara I’ve learnt of a tragedy that has this afternoon struck at Akala Market, Gem Subcounty, along Kisumu-Bondo road where a lorry lost control and ran over roadside traders, leading to several injuries and two fatalities. Our personnel from the County Emergency Response Unit have evacuated the five injured and rushed them to Bondo Sub County and Siaya Referral Hospitals where they are receiving treatment. I thank members of the public and the first responders whose speedy action has saved many lives. I appeal for calm as we seek a conducive site for our hard working traders. My heart-felt sympathies are with all who are impacted by this horrific situation.”
An eyewitness has said the lorry which was traveling from the direction of Kisumu towards Bondo lost control and mopped down thickly crowded traders on the right side of the open air roadside market.
