Siaya Governor James Orengo on Tuesday marked the World Fisheries Day at Liwatoni Fishing Port in Mombasa.
Among other dignitaries the event was graced by former Kwale Governor, now Fisheries Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya. The CS issued a confirmation that the next World Fisheries Day will be celebrated in Siaya County.
He also announced that the national government had set aside KES 1.5 billion for the development of lake front landing sites in Siaya County specifically in Luanda K’Otieno, Asembo Bay and Wich Lum.
Governor Orengo thanked the Government for the generous allocation but pointed out that resources around Lake Victoria could be harnessed better to benefit the people of the region with more revenue.
World Fisheries Day, celebrated on November 21, is dedicated to highlighting the critical importance of healthy ocean ecosystems and to ensure sustainable stocks of fisheries in the world.
Fishing communities celebrate this day through rallies, workshops, public meetings, cultural dramas, exhibitions, and music shows.
Folk also demonstrate the importance of maintaining the fisheries of the world along with highlighting the problems like overfishing and mechanization. World Fisheries Day also explores finding solutions to the increasingly interconnected problems that the world is facing to follow sustainable models of our ocean and lake ecosystems.
