Police in Homa Bay county are investigating circumstances in which a 41-year-old fisherman died under circumstances suspected to be suicide in Litare Beach, Lake Victoria.
The deceased, identified as Dan Ouma Ojwang’ died near Litare Beach in Suba North sub-county of Homabay County on Monday evening.
Ouma is reported to have committed suicide by jumping into the lake after failing to find his missing smartphone at his brother’s house. He had accused his brother’s wife of stealing the phone.
Eyewitnesses raised an alarm and alerted officers from the local police station. A rescue mission was launched, however, the efforts proved futile because he had sunk in water.
The police have liaised with the local fishermen to help in retrieving the fisherman’s body.
