Following a quick response by detectives from the Special Crime Unit of the DCI both of the rifles stolen on Monday from police officers guarding exams at Mahero Secondary School have been recovered.
A Wednesday morning shootout at a homestead in Nina Village next to Douglas Shopping centre saw two of the suspects shot dead while a third escaped with bullet wounds.
Through cooperation with the public the detectives traced a phone stolen from Port Victoria to a Bodaboda rider of Ugandan origin in Nyadorera Market . The rider was arrested on Tuesday and while being interrogated spilled the beans on four of his accomplices who incidentally included the two being sought for stealing the guns and killing the officer.
One of the suspects shot dead is of Somali origin while the other is said to hail from Western Kenya.
Immediately the police left the scene irate residents descended on the homestead razing to the ground the house which had been used as a hideout by the criminals.
The police also arrested one of the criminals while the owner of the hideout named Sheikh Rashid escaped the dragnet. Two other criminals including the one with a bullet in his thigh are still at large.
