Roads, Transport and Public Works Cabinet Secretary Onesmus Kipchumba Murkomen suffered the same hostile ordeal as his Energy counterpart when he was booed by a crowd at Baringo Showground on Saturday.
The event which was a combination of the Governor’s Cup and OKM Peace Cup ended prematurely as youth from Baringo captured on a video clip now gone viral specifically told the CS that they would not accommodate stealing of results.
“Kama ni hivyo munataka kutuibia mpaka matokeo hatutakubali [if that’s how you manipulate everything including sporting results, we are not taking it],” audibly says a youth in the clip.
Then follows chants of “Ruto Must Go”.
Late Sunday evening Mr. Murkomen in a subtle move at disaster management posted on his Twitter handle that the Ruto being referred to in the clip is a sporting official and not the president of the Republic of Kenya.
Funny enough Kenyans have seen through this clever ploy and called out the cabinet secretary.
Last week in the presence of President Ruto, a rowdy crowd shouted down Mr. Davis Chirchir as he made claims that the rising cost of living was adequately being addressed by the Kenya Kwanza administration. Efforts to address the crowd in the vernacular only drew up more ire and the CS was forced to lamely cut short his speech.
Both Kipchumba Murkomen and Davis Chirchir were adversely mentioned by fellow Kalenjin politician and Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei as the masterminds behind the KES 17 billion oil imports debacle.
In the women’s final game, Kabarnet Starlets beat Ndambul FC by 3 goals to nil.
The men’s finals had to be postponed after Baringo Youth FC from Kabarnet, Baringo Central, protested their loss against Chemogoch FC from Mogotio, who it appeared were being favoured by the CS.
“The officials did their best to resolve the matter,” posted Mr. Murkomen, adding “but the Baringo central team were not satisfied. Being the home team, and with their fans being more than half of the stadium, it was impossible to proceed with the match. The players and the fans poured their frustrations on FKF officials, especially one Mr. Ruto, whom they felt, was not addressing their concerns.”
A repeat of the finals will now take place in Kapenguria.
“Sports can be emotive, but football is a beautiful and popular game that can be used to foster peace. A friend who followed the incident joked that we should stick to athletics!”, posted Murkomen adding laughter emojis.
Replies in his timeline did not go for the intended pun but instead told the CS he had lost the support of his tribesmen.
A user from Georgia, Atlanta posted: “CS Murkomen, you are on the radar from the Kalenjin, people from Nandi are not happy, Baringo residents too have just confirmed that uko na siasa ya madharau”
Other replies were not so pleasant. It should be noted that the CS is an ardent fan of Manchester United and would have tweeted instead about the 3-0 win over Everton had the chants been directed at a sports official and not the president.
