After Siaya County was declared Open Defecation Free due to improved access to basic sanitation, there have been ongoing efforts to ensure that communities continue to improve their sanitation status. The ultimate goal is for all households in the county to have access to improved sanitation, safe water, proper hygiene practices, and Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) by 2030.
This commitment was formalized by CECM Health Dr. Martin Konyango on behalf of County Chief HE James Orengo, along with Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) stakeholders, to ensure that 100% of sanitation in Siaya County is improved. This initiative is expected to reduce the spread of diseases such as cholera, which are linked to poor sanitation.
To achieve this goal, the county government in partnership with various Non-Governmental organisations has embarked on a number of initiatives including the provision of subsidized improved latrines to households, and the training of Community Health Promoters (CHPs) on proper hygiene practices and Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM).
The county government has also partnered with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and other stakeholders to ensure that the message of improved sanitation reaches every corner of the county. With these efforts, Siaya County is on track to achieve its goal of 100% improved sanitation by 2030.
