The Senate was on Thursday treated to a crash course on urban slang after Senator Karen Nyamu rose to seek a statement from the Standing Committee on National Security Defense and Foreign Relations on the upsurge of a popular trend known as “aluta”.
“Aluta Continua” is a Latin phrase that translates to “the struggle continues” in English.
It has been adopted as a rallying cry and motto in various social and political movements, emphasizing the ongoing fight for justice, equality, and positive change.
In Nairobi, however, Aluta Sunday means trans-night partying beginning Saturday evening to the wee hours of Sunday morning. The partying specifically involves the ingestion of weed (another slang for cannabis sativa) and may also involve strip-dance performances.
Nominated Senator Karen Nyamu told a rapt Senate hearing that she knew 5 clubs along Thika Superhighway which specializes in Aluta.
It is believed the proliferation of the culture is eating into the religious fabric of the city as many people returning from the trans-night weed smoking orgies are too tired to attend Sunday service.
Speaking in street lingo last week Karen Nyamu said: “kuna kitu inaendelea huku Nairobi ati Aluta na Mimi ndio nitaichoma”.
