A teenage boy’s dream of becoming rich quickly collapsed when he was arrested at a bank in Nyamira where police believe he had gone to steal.

The Form Three student’s efforts to escape from the local KCB branch backfired, police said.

Nyamira South cub-county police commander Isaac Sang said the teenager sneaked into the bank at night hoping to land on bundles of cash.

“However, all he could find were files and papers. When we arrived, we found out that the teenager had rummaged through the files in the drawers and had even gained access into the manager’s office only to find there wasn’t any money there,” Sang said.

The officer said preliminary investigations indicated that the boy gained entry into the banking through the window. The police discovered that the window had been interfered with.

The incident happened on Sunday night at around 1.30 am. A night guard at the bank said he noticed strange movements in the banking hall and raised the alarm. He called the bank manager who alerted the police.

The police moved into the bank in Nyamira Town and cordoned off the building.
“We tracked his movements by reviewing the bank’s CCTV footage. We were able to follow how he moved from the banking hall to the offices and eventually into a toilet. He sneaked out through a vent but he didn’t go far because he ended up in the basement of the locked building where we finally arrested him,” Sang said.
Police have since established that the boy is a student at a secondary school in Nyamira County.

Sang said they are still investigating the matter to establish if there were any other people involved. No money, or any property, was lost during the incident.
