In a bizarre turn of events on Christmas Day, unidentified individuals forcibly entered a store at the Siaya County Referral Hospital and made off with oxygen cylinders valued at over KES 270,000.
The theft is unique in that it falls under a section of the hospital that is under twenty-four-hour security guard.
Details of the theft were brought to light at 6 am on Christmas Day when the hospital’s head of maintenance, Joseph Odunga, reported the incident to authorities. Security guards changing shifts discovered the missing cylinders during the handover process.
Subsequently, Siaya County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo issued a statement saying preliminary investigations indicated a break-in through the back door of the facility.
The stolen oxygen tanks are critical resources, particularly amid the ongoing global health challenges. Siaya County at one time rolled out an oxygen manufacturing plant whose progress is lately shrouded in mystery.
The police are actively probing the matter, with an aim to identify the culprits behind this audacious theft.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding essential medical equipment during these challenging times.
All said and done: who could possibly steal clinical oxygen tanks worth so much unless there was a pandemic or medical crisis somewhere? Or was this merely an act of sabotage?
