Kisii Woman Representative Dorice Donya has cleared the air after a video showing her appearing to verbally abuse her employee in a telephone conversation went viral.
In the clip, the politician is seen and heard asking someone believed to be her bodyguard why he has stayed away from work for three weeks.
“I’ve not seen you for three weeks at work,” she says.
She adds: “You lost your wife, yes I know, and you buried her two weeks ago. You were mourning your wife? So you stayed for three weeks because you were mourning your wife and you didn’t come to work? How is mourning your wife related to work? You were paid for what you are doing at work. You have not come to work for three weeks and you are telling me that you were mourning your wife? You people are not serious, I don’t know what is wrong with you people.”
In her rebuttal, after the message caused a hue and cry on social media, the MP refuted allegations she was secretly recorded.
She maintains that none of her bodyguards is bereaved, adding that she intended to send a message to Kenyans and especially her colleagues in the political field to respect their employees.
“People think I was caught off-guard. Sometimes, you don’t have to defend yourself so much. That is simply a satire,” she explained.
Satire is one of the genres in literature which is mostly used in novels, books, or drama, where the character uses humour to ridicule someone or the government to expose the reality without literally mentioning them.
The lawmaker maintains she is well versed with the harassment that the majority of county workers, and even in the government are undergoing in the hands of their bosses.
“They want to mourn their beloved ones but the bosses don’t want. When you use satire, it means there are forces that you are trying to mention and they are so strong that you cannot get to them directly. You just want people to know that we know what you are doing to your juniors. That is to warn people that when someone is bereaved, don’t treat them badly.”
She also maintains she will not apologise for the incident even as she appeared to have a dig at Kisii Governor Simba Arati for ‘not paying contractors on time’.
Ms Donyo was elected on a Wiper party ticket in the 2022 polls. She is a well-known media personality.
