A tragic accident occurred near Solio Ranch in Laikipia County on the evening of Thursday, December 28, claiming the lives of at least ten individuals.
The collision occurred between a Nyeri-bound 14-seater matatu from Nyahururu and an oncoming personal vehicle along the Nyeri-Nyahururu highway. The impact tragically claimed the life of a motorcycle rider, and a family of six is reported to be among the fatalities.
Emergency responders were yet to confirm the exact number of casualties at the time of reporting. The injured were swiftly transported to Mary Immaculate Hospital Mweiga, with some cases referred to Nyeri County Referral Level 5 Hospital. Witnesses revealed that potholes on the road have been a recurring concern, contributing to several accidents in recent times.
Law enforcement authorities worked to clear the scene, causing traffic congestion in the aftermath of the accident. This tragic incident follows closely after another road mishap in Mombasa, where two people lost their lives and several others sustained injuries. The Mombasa incident involved a Mash Cool bus en route to Malindi from Nairobi colliding with a heavy truck near Taru Town Center along the Mombasa-Nairobi Highway on Sunday, December 24.
These unfortunate events highlight the ongoing challenges and safety concerns on major highways, prompting a renewed call for comprehensive measures to address road safety issues.
