The family of 36-year-old Austine Odhiambo seeks justice after he was allegedly run over by a police vehicle executing an auction order on December 28, 2023.

The incident occurred yesterday in Ugenya sub-County, Siaya County.

Rhemat Auctioneers claimed that Lucy Akinyi Owino, once married to the deceased, owed a debt of Ksh. 13,800 to First Community Savings and Credit Co-operative Society, with auctioneer fees totaling Ksh. 81,300.

Austine’s father, Boniface Opondo, asserts that police officers allegedly dragged his son before he fell and was fatally struck by the Land Cruiser. The deceased had questioned the auction of their three in-calf cows and attempted to capture evidence with his phone, but tragedy ensued.

Rushed to Ukwala sub-county hospital, Austine succumbed to his injuries on arrival, leaving the family frustrated with the security agencies’ handling of the incident.

Collins Otieno, Austine’s younger brother, decries the distorted police statement at Ukwala police station, prompting them to seek intervention from the County Police Commander’s office.

Neighbour Enock Otieno alleges the lack of a legitimate auction order, urging higher security agencies to intervene for justice.

County Assembly Member Oduor Odongo condemns the incident, vowing to ensure accountability for the responsible police officer. Siaya County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo acknowledges the conflicting reports but assures a thorough investigation, promising consequences if an officer is found culpable.

In conclusion, the tragic death of Austine Odhiambo highlights a disturbing pattern of abuse of police power during auction processes. The family’s quest for justice resonates with broader calls for accountability, emphasising the need for a thorough investigation into the incident.
