Mpesa Downtime — Was Government Synchronizing KRA PIN with Mpesa Statement?

Safaricom’s mobile money platform, M-Pesa was down for close to three hours on Tuesday prompting users to wonder whether the government of Kenya was synchronizing KRA Personal Identity Numbers (PIN) to their Mpesa transactions.

The fear was not without basis as President Dr William Samoei Ruto has been quoted in the past saying the government will eventually take that route to nab tax cheats who always file NIL Returns.

Users invaded social media platforms with speculation of all kinds. The monopoly Mpesa enjoys in money transfer was felt by millions of subscribers who were left stranded, high and dry.

Since its inception in 2007, M-PESA has gained massive traction and heavy reliance by individuals and businesses alike. It has since been successful in the country taking a massive 97% share in the mobile money market.

While the Safaricom page on X responded instantly to queries from users, it’s pathetic that they had to wait for the system to fold up altogether before alerting their numerous customers.

Both STK and the App were affected by the downtime.

The technical hitch has finally been resolved with Safaricom posting on X:

“All M-PESA services are now available.”

The message has brought a palpable air of relief among individual users and businesses.

Only the question will not go away — was the government synchronizing KRA Personal Identity Numbers to our transactions?
