Medical staff at the Siaya County Referral Hospital struggled without success to save the life of a newborn baby who was recovered from a pit latrine at a village in Gem Yala Sub County.
According to East Gem Location Chief George Salala, the infant was recovered from the pit latrine by Onding’ B villagers.
A person who had visited a toilet to respond to a call of nature heard the faint cries of the newborn.
“The person heard a baby cry underneath and immediately suspected that something was wrong. It is then that the person quickly mobilized the neighbours and managed to rescue the infant who has since been rushed to Siaya County Referral Hospital for specialized care,” Salala said.
Already, a 19-year-old woman named Brenda Akiru is spending the weekend in police custody at Bar Kalare Police Post after she was suspected of being the mother of the baby.
Police are on with investigations and the teenager will be produced in court next week.
