The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions has dissociated itself from a report circulating on social media Tuesday afternoon.
The fake statement bore the official logo of the Office of the Director of Prosecutions (above).
The fake statement on a letter bearing the logo of the agency alleged that South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro and three police officers were to be charged with attempted murder.
The statement further said that the DPP had granted consent to DCI to arraign Osoro in court.
The report referred to inexistent investigations on an incident where supporters of Osoro ambushed a rally conducted by Kisii Governor Simba Arati in South Mugirango, Kisii County.
Gunshots were fired and police in Kisii are following up with local investigations on the fracas. There was nothing to do with attempted murder investigations.
In a statement on Tuesday, ODPP cautioned Kenyans against the press release saying it is fake.
“Fake press statement: We wish to notify the public that the Press statement circulating on social media purportedly to be from ODPP is fake!”
