The Siaya County Police Boss Cleti Kimaiyo said the body of the deceased was moved to Yala Hospital mortuary pending autopsy as police continue pursuing the suspect who is yet to be apprehended.

Meanwhile, Siaya police are investigating the cause of a fire in which a one-and-half year-old baby was burnt beyond recognition as his grandmother’s home was razed down.

According to a report by Royal Media Services  the baby died after his grandmother’s house caught fire at Murumba village Uhuyi sub-location in Ugunja sub-county on Tuesday evening.

Siaya County Police Commander Cleti Kimaiyo confirmed that baby Jayden Otieno was sleeping in the sitting room when the house caught fire.

He said that preliminary investigations have established that a passerby, namely Leonida Atieno, saw smoke emanating from the house of 93-year-old grandmother Clementino Oundo and raised the alarm.

Kimaiyo stated that this prompted the neighbors to rush to the scene and try to put out the fire in vain as it had engulfed part of the house with the infant inside, burning him beyond recognition.

He said the cause of that fire has not yet been established.

However, it is suspected that the visually impaired grandmother had lit a cigarette inside the house which started the fire.

While confirming the incident, the police boss stated that the grandmother was rescued from the fire.

Kimaiyo added that several used matchsticks and cigarette filters were found inside the burnt house, adding that investigations have been launched.
