Leaders of the Kibra Societal Empowerment, Peace and Budget Champions Organization today appeared in court in a case where refugee Diedonne Ngendakumana was assaulted and robbed by the owner(s) of Checkpoint Bar Wines & Spirits.

Deputy Chairman Geofrey Okwaro and Secretary General  Hrd. David Livingstone Kose Oyombe were seeking to safeguard the Constitution in Kibera Law Court this morning by promoting, respecting, upholding, defending, and protecting the supreme document as stipulated in Articles 3,19, 20, 21 and 22 respectively.

Refugee safety, security and protection fall under the Ministry of Interior in the Department of the Refugees Services by Refugees Act 2021.

According to the case before the Magistrate, Ngendakumana who was a patron at the Checkpoint Bar failed to pay a certain amount owed to the owners who reverted to the inhumane act of beating him up and striping him of his phone and other personal belongings.

The incident took place at Toi Open Air Market beside Kibera Plaza next to the Jua Kali Sector and garages where change dens and liquor points flourish without proper documentation licensing and permits.

Refugees are specifically targeted during the attacks prompting the Kibra Societal Empowerment, Peace and Budget Champions Organization to step in.

Speaking outside the Kibra Law Courts David Livingstone Kose Oyombe said:

“As the host community and Refugees Champions, we condemn the act and call upon the government to immediately arrest the involved culprits in the said Robbery with Violence towards Diedonne Ngendakumana and close all change dens and wines and spirit within Toi Open Air Market and the surroundings operating against the law.”

Kenya subscribes to numerous UN and OAU Charter regarding the security, safety and rights of refugees.
