A Nairobi court today heard the harrowing details from a woman who sold her One-month Old Baby for KES 40,000.
The single mother of three who lives in Dandora but hails from Siaya, Eunice Awino, made the heart-wrenching decision to sell her one-month-old baby for KSh 40,000 claiming she was unable to fend for her family.
According to a local online tabloid which broke the story the illusive Detective Jane Mugo, is said to have uncovered the transaction between Eunice Awino and a Tanzanian woman who made the purchase to cover her barrenness.
Awino tearfully explained to the court that being a single mother with two other children the daunting responsibilities of caring for a newborn left her in a financially impossible situation.
The father of her baby had abandoned all responsibility, leaving her to face the overwhelming demands of raising three children alone. Awino’s dire circumstances pushed her to a breaking point, where the unthinkable seemed like the only option in her desperate quest for relief.
“I did not intentionally sell the baby. I was going through a lot of challenges from the time I got pregnant. I am anemic, so I had to stay at the hospital most of the time. Rent, food, and clothing for me and the other two children were enormous challenges,” Awino explained, pleading guilty at the court of law.
The person who bought the baby, a Tanzanian lady, also admitted to the deal. The transaction was settled at KSh 40,000 as Awino sought a solution to the overwhelming challenges her family was facing. Detective Jane Mugo’s intervention led to Awino’s arrest, highlighting the grim reality of families pushed to extremes in the face of financial hardship.
