Busia Senator Okiya Okoiti Omtatah was on Friday morning involved in an accident along the Kisumu-Busia Road.
The accident occurred around the Ojola area as the driver a trailer lost control crashing into his vehicle and throwing him off the road.
Speaking to a local media house, Omtatah noted that the trailer hit his vehicle as he attempted to swerve. Omtatah who was with his driver, survived the accident without sustaining any significant injuries.
According to the Senator, the trailer landed in a ditch several meters away.
Narrating the horrific incident, the Senator explained that he swerved after realizing the trailer had lost control, noting that he was lucky to have narrowly escaped death.
Omtatah further stated that the safety belt held him intact on the chair thus protecting him from getting injured. However, the vehicle landed on the side of the road.
The driver of the trailer upon questioning stated that the brakes failed to function, forcing him to swerve from the main road, crashing into the senator’s vehicle.
Reports indicated that officers from Maseno Police Station processed the scene and launched investigations into the accident.
Omtatah further confirmed that he was able to head home after the police officers provided him with a land cruiser.
A report from the National Transport and Safety Authority(NTSA) indicated that the most unsafe and deadly time to travel on Kenyan roads was between 7-9 pm, noting that 1,100 fatalities were recorded during this window.
The data further showed that 563 people lost their lives to road accidents between January 1 and February 11, 2024, with pedestrians accounting for the highest number at 216 deaths.
