The Siaya County Government has embarked on a serious programme of milk production following the distribution of more than 200 dairy cattle to farmers in North Uyoma.

In an effort to empower local farmers, the County has disbursed 215 heads of dairy cattle to the famers.

Governor James Orengo while presiding over the disbursement of dairy cows in North Uyoma said this strategic move is meant to bolster the dairy farming sector and amplify economic opportunities for the farming community.

The allocation of these dairy cows emerged following a meticulous selection process, where farmers from, Kagwa, and entire North Uyoma were identified through a comprehensive public participation exercise conducted during a budget forum.

“We are keen on ensuring that farmers livelihoods are improved and so the cows go a long way in ensuring that is achieved,” said Orengo.

Orengo further urged MCAs to expedite the passage of the cooperative development fund regulations to pave way for funds disbursement.

“We have an allocation of KES 50 million for the cooperative development funds but it lacks guidelines that would allow disbursement. Once it’s approved by assembly, even the groups benefitting from dairy cows today shall use it to expand other agricultural ventures.”

The County Executive for Agriculture and Livestock Silvester Kokoth said the estimated production of milk is 15 litres per day.

The average of 15 litres per day per cow, foresees an annual yield of approximately 660 litres .

Expressing gratitude towards the residents of North Uyoma for their increased support to the agriculture and livestock department, Mr.  K’Okoth pointed out the sector’s dual role in productivity and its potential to spur the county’s economy.

The purchase of the dairy cattle was made possible through the active participation of the farmers, who allocated More than Ksh 8 million towards the purchase of the cattle during a public participation forum.

Some of the beneficiaries like Anna Omollo and Peter Odhiambo expressed their appreciation for the County’s commitment in uplifting their living standards.

Omollo , thrilled with the fulfillment of the Governor’s promise, lauded the timely delivery of the heifers.

On his part Odhiambo said he will now delve into milk production after receiving a dairy cow , alongside fish farming as well as poultry farming.

At the same time, the Agriculture Chief officer Elizabeth Adongo encouraged the beneficiaries to join Cooperative Societies to maximize benefits.

This cooperative approach will help farmers access resources, markets, and valuable support to improve their dairy businesses.

She stressed the significance of proper feeding, pest, and disease control, and the implementation of a closed system of management to augment fodder production.

“The distributed cows were diligently de-wormed and vaccinated against foot and mouth disease before being handed over to the farmers to ensure their health and productivity,” said Adongo.

This comprehensive initiative not only augments the dairy industry but also stands as a testament to the County’s commitment to uplifting agricultural prosperity and bolstering the local economy in Uyoma,” said Adongo .

She further revealed that the department of Agriculture has prioritized subsidized fertilizers and seeds that will benefit farmers this rainy season.
