A short while back a graphic circulated online claiming that Kenya’s anti-corruption agency EACC raided the home of Siaya Governor James Aggrey Bob Orengo.
Kenya’s Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has announced that it is investigating governors and senior county officials. They have been accused of embezzling funds through proxy companies.
The EACC is a government agency tasked with fighting corruption, economic crime and unethical behaviour.
In a report released in December 2023, the EACC uncovered misappropriation of funds in 10 counties. Siaya county, in western Kenya, is among those being investigated for embezzlement of over KSh400 million (about US$2.5 million).
Following this, a graphic emerged on social media claiming that on 5 January 2024, the EACC raided the residence of Siaya governor James Orengo.
The graphic featured Orengo’s photo and the EACC logo. It was headlined “breaking news”, said there was an “ongoing EACC raid” and promised further updates.
It also said: “EACC raid Governor Orengo’s home in Siaya.”
