2 people have been confirmed dead and scores injured as a Mombasa-bound bus collided with an oil tanker in Busia.
The tragic accident involved a Tahmeed Bus travelling from Busia to Mombasa which collided head-on with a Kampala-bound tanker around Mundika High School along Busia-Bumala Road.
The grisly accident occurred at a usually deserted patch of the Busia highway and reports have been scanty apart from the police statement.
Initially, it was feared that several lives had been lost, and many others were rushed to nearby hospitals nursing grievous injuries.
The Kenya Red Cross confirmed the incident in a statement on Friday, March 1 noting that response teams had been sent to the area.
“Following a head-on collision involving an oil tanker and a PSV Bus at Mundika junction in Busia County, response teams have been deployed to the scene, including the County Fire Brigade and Red Cross Action team. Ongoing efforts are underway as fire has erupted as a consequence of the collision,” the Kenya Red Cross stated.
Videos circulating online showed thick smoke engulfing the air as rescuers worked to extinguish a fire on the tanker using a hose.
Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah extended his condolences to the affected families and friends.
“It is with shock and disbelief that I have received the sad news of the tragic road accident between an oil tanker and a PSV bus bound for Mombasa in the Mundika area. I extend my deepest condolences to the families and friends. My thoughts are now with the victims & their families,” Okiya Omtatah said.
