Kisumu County Senatorial aspirant Wakili Fred Odumo Nying’uro will hold consultations with ODM Party officials in Kisumu West sub-County on Saturday 2 March, 2024 (tomorrow).

The meeting on Saturday to map out strategies has come just in time as the countrywide Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party recruitment which kicked off on 11 November 2023 comes to an end this March.

Subsequently, the ODM Party is set to hold national grassroots elections in April and a national delegates convention in June.

While speaking in Mombasa early this year the party leader Raila Amollo Odinga confirmed that this time round the events will run as scheduled without any hitches.

“We are in the process of membership recruitment, you know that our party holds elections every five years, and recruitment of membership is continuous, we started in November and it will continue till March this year, “said Raila.

This comes even as concerns continue within the party about the decline in its activities that has given its rivals a platform to eat into some of its support bases.

The elections will pave the way for new office bearers in the chairmanship and secretary general positions respectively. Nominated MP John Mbadi is the current National Chairman of the party while Edwin Sifuna is the Secretary-general.

“We will do our party elections in April, and then do a national delegate’s convention between May and June this 2024,” said Raila while addressing journalists at a media briefing in Mombasa in January.

ODM has never attempted to conduct its elections since 2014 when a planned exercise at Kasarani was aborted midway. Trouble started when a group of delegates led by a then-nominated MP caused mayhem at the venue destroying ballot boxes and election materials.

Billed as the largest single political party in Kenya ODM Party is facing another unique challenge with party leader Raila Amollo Odinga set to assume continental office next year if he is appointed chairman of the African Union Commission.

Already there’s talk of succession and re-strategising for new positions. With his apparent popularity within the party, it won’t come as a surprise if Wakili Fred Odumo Nying’uro goes for any party position.
