Siaya County water department is in talks with partners to craft short term strategies that will increase water coverage from 55 percent to 65 percent by 2027.
According to Water Executive Jacquelin Oduol, it’s the crafting of short term and long term strategies that will end water woes in Siaya.
Going forward, she said, we want to work closely with partners to facilitate projects that are visible and of great impacts in the County.
She added”children would be seen in the evening off the stream a clear indication that we still have a lot to do for the households to access water.
The CECM spoke while meeting water Stakeholders in Siaya town.
“Let us have a common goal and mobilize resources towards achieving it. As we continue to engage in talks, let’s craft short term goals .
Oduol told them to consider supporting them on last mile connectivity aspects
“As we go to the year 2027, we should look into last Mile Connectivity.
Though we have some funds at the budget for connectivity purposes but it would take a longer time for funds to be availed and so am persuading with stakeholders including Municipality, Muungano Network, Disability groups, Non-governmental organisations to help us actualise it.
Water connectivity is now our number one priority as a department of water. Ugunja Sega Ukwala water project that consumed Sh 1.2 billion has its tanks full with water and extending it to the households is still a challenge.
Oduol said the project was done by the National government and connectivity part of it was not in the design.
“The National government are saying that they have done the project and only working on turbines after which they will hand over it to county government.
The meeting was attended by Director Public health Ken Orwenjo.
The meeting was also attended by Public Health Coordinator Geophrey Kotonya who asked Siaya residents to embrace safe sanitation.
Out of 249,000 households in Siaya only 36,000 which is equivalent to 14 percent latrine coverage have been installed with sato products.
The Sato products enhances safe and decent sanitation.
So many people in Siaya still rely on open pit latrines to relieve themselves. They are exposed to infectious diseases, insects and terrible odours everyday.
“Sato aims at solving these problems by providing affordable and easy to install toilet systems to local communities,” said Kotonya
Kotonya said they are going to map out the government officers with open pit latrines and enlist them for naming and shaming reasons.
