10-year-old Dies by Drowning in Quarry at Misori, Hawinga Village

A ten-year-old boy known as Rodgers Tago has died by drowning in a quarry in Misori village, Hawinga area of Alego-Usonga Constituency, Siaya County.

The quarry which is a gaping hole left by a contractor who recently extracted murram to rehabilitate the Kombo Road is a veritable death-trap which the villagers have been complaining about.

The contractor is said to be a reputable Siaya businessman and had initially undertaken to refill the quarry after extracting the murram but reneged on the promise.

Eyewitness reports indicate that the two young boys went to collect water from the quarry and one of them slipped and drowned as he made efforts to grab his jerrican which was floating away.

The father of the deceased Mr. Zakayo Magaya is away in Mombasa. He is the son of renowned Roho Israel preacher John Ojwang Tago of Kaugagi Hawinga.

Police were summoned by Madam Consolata Katiba the Assistant Chief of Kaugagi Hawinga and are currently processing the scene.
