One student and an adult died following an accident that occurred on Monday night at the Mamboleo area of Kisumu.
According to eyewitness reports scores were injured as the bus travelling from Kakamega to Nairobi skidded and overturned while negotiating a roundabout.
“It had drizzled in Kisumu and the road was slippery,” the eyewitness told DalanewsKe, adding “the driver lost control and the bus skidded before overturning.”
The student was confirmed dead on the spot while reports from Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital indicate one of the injured rushed to hospital by first responders was declared dead on arrival.
Most of the passengers were identified as students of Chavakali High School in Western Kenya who had just closed school and were going for holidays.
The severity of the accident resulted in several students sustaining injuries, with a few, surprisingly left unscathed
In a report released late last night Nyanza Regional Traffic Commander, Allan Mwangi, provided insights into the aftermath of the accident, stating that police officers are diligently working to assess the exact number of casualties.
“My officers are at the scene while others are currently visiting different hospitals to ascertain the exact number of injured students. What we can confirm so far is that one student is dead,” he confirmed.
According to St Johns Ambulance, 10 students were seriously injured and rushed to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital.
