Senior Police Officer Found Dead in His House After Declaring War on Illicit Brew

Mbita Deputy County Commissioner (DCC) Moranga Morekwa was Monday found dead in his official residence in Mbita town, Homa Bay County.

The body of Morekwa was found lying inside his house.

His death shocked government officials as it occurred after the officer led his team in a raid against illicit brew and unlicenced bars and restaurants.

The raid was undertaken last Friday by the officer together with a multi-agency government team.

They arrested people who perpetrate consumption of illicit alcohol in the sub-County.

The raid was conducted to control the consumption of alcohol during the Good Friday celebration in the area and among residents of the Mbita sub-County.

Homa Bay County Commissioner Moses Lilan said Morekwa’s sudden demise has shocked them because he did not demonstrate any signs of illness.

“Morekwa saw no signs of sickness and nobody knew he would die. Just last Friday, they raided alcohol outlets to get rid of illicit brew and unlicensed bars,” Lilan said.

The Ministry of Interior had announced a crackdown across the country to eradicate sales of illicit drugs and operations of unlicenced bars.

Speaking on Tuesday, Lilan said they have not established what killed the administrator.

It is reported that Morekwa fell sick two weeks ago but he regained his health and resumed his official duties as usual.

“He regained his health and resumed his official duties as usual. Unfortunately, his death was sudden,” he said.

The county commissioner described Morekwa as a cornerstone officer in promoting law and order in the Mbita subcounty.

He said Morekwa was a hardworking officer and committed to enforcing the law and order in line with the government regulations.

“His contributions to the fight against illicit brews made an indelible mark in the county. I pass my condolences to his family,” Lilan said.

Morkwa’s body was moved to Kirindo MED 25 mortuary in Kirindo trading centre in Suba North constituency.

The government is facilitating the transfer of the body to Nairobi in line with his family’s request.

“The family requested us to transfer the body to Nairobi. We are making all possible arrangements and we are going to transfer the body to allow the family to start making burial arrangements.

Morekwa was transferred to Mbita in June last year after serving as a DCC in Tana North and Kajiado West sub counties.

He hailed from Kisii County.
