Details have emerged how powerful cabinet ministers approached a journalist to stop writing about the fake fertilizer that is currently the focus of controversy in the country.

Speaking before a Senate Select Agriculture Committee, John Allan Namu, founder-editor of Africa Uncensored said he was approached by powerful individuals in the government to stop writing about the fake fertilizer and pull down a story he had already published on the same.

Namu vowed to provide evidence implicating some top politicians who approached him to stop the story from seeing the light of day since it carried details of importation of the contentious fake fertilizer.

He expressed his shock before the committee that the persons who approached him were not remorseful and actually did not care that the public would incur losses in the billions of shillings if they planted using the fake fertiliser.

He said he was in a position to provide details of unscrupulous politicians and businessmen tied in to the importation of the fake fertilizer.

This confession comes even as Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has called on the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) to reveal the suppliers implicated in the recent fake subsidized fertilizer scandal.

Speaking at a church fundraising event in Bomet County on Sunday, Mudavadi urged the NCPB to disclose the names of individuals involved in distributing counterfeit fertilizer to farmers so they can be held accountable under the law.

“We are urging the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) not to delay because they know the supply chain and can identify which consignment was brought in by whom out of this fertilizer. Let us ensure that the law catches up with these individuals so they can face charges,” he emphasized.

Meanwhile the public continues to call for the resignation of Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi.
