A man aged 32 years is being detained in custody at the Siaya Police Station after being arrested for cultivating cannabis sativa (bhang).
The suspect has been identified as Patrick Owino Ayieng, a resident of Nyangera village in Nyadorera ‘A’ sub-location.
Reports indicate that the man was arrested by the area assistant chief with the help of officers from Rwambwa Police Post following a tip-off from members of the public.
During the arrest Patrick Owino Ayieng was found to have planted around 45 stems of raw cannabis sativa among other crops in his farm at Nyangera village.
Siaya Police Commandant Cleti Kimaiyo has confirmed that the suspect will be arraigned in court today after being processed. He also avowed that the police will continue with the crackdown to ensure that growing of the illegal drug is eradicated in the Usonga area.
It is an offence in Kenya to grow, handle or sell hemp also known as marijuana.
