Government Orders Suspension, Seizure of Fake Fertilizer

The Ministry of Agriculture has ordered the suspension and seizure of fake fertiliser distributed under the subsidy programme after receiving test results from the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS).

In a statement, the Ministry led by Cabinet Secretary Mithika Linturi confirmed that fertilisers distributed by KEL Chemicals branded Kelphos Plus, Kelphos gold and NPK 10:26:10 did not meet all required test parameters.

According to the ministry, the affected consignment was distributed by KEL Chemical fertilizers between 5th and 10th March 2024.

“Following release of test results by the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), the government has taken decisive action to safeguard the agricultural sector and farmers by announcing the immediate suspension of KEL Chemicals’ operations and seizure of its fertilizer products,” read the statement in part.

It further indicated that the government has further seized and impounded all fertilizer stocks distributed by KEL Chemicals at the National Cereals Produce Board (NCPB) facilities. This step is essential to control and mitigate any adverse effects on agricultural practices.

“The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development strongly advises farmers who have acquired or possess fertilizer from KEL Chemicals to immediately discontinue its use and to visit their nearest NCPB facility for further guidance,” highlighted the statement.

“This measure underscores the government’s commitment to upholding stringent product quality and safety standards, ensuring accountability and safeguarding the agricultural sector and the wider public,” it added.

Following the findings, the ministry directed farmers to stop using the fertiliser and visit NCPB stores for further instructions.

The findings come days after CS Linturi denied reports of fake fertiliser in circulation. He blamed the opposition for spreading the reports.

However, recently he appeared to have a change of heart calling for a probe into the matter.
