Siaya: ECD Teachers to Receive KES 41 Million in New Salaries Package — Kut Ochogo

The County Government of Siaya through its Education Department has proposed in the 2024/2025 budget KES 41 Million and KES 9 million to effect salary increment to 602 ECD teachers and recruitment of 20 Vocational Training Center Instructors respectively.

The ECD teachers were recently absorbed on permanent and pensionable terms.

According to Education Chief Officer Dr. Kut Ochogo, the KES 41 million will effect salary increment for the ECD teachers.

From July, they will earn salary as per their academic qualifications but they currently earn a flat rate of KES 15,000.

Currently, the county government spends KES 113.2 million annually on teachers salaries and that will increase to KES 264 million subject to the approval of the budget estimates by the assembly.

KES 110 million has been set aside by the Education Department to roll out school feeding programme in the 30 Wards.
The bursary kitty allocation stands at KES 90 million.

“Gender Based Violence Rescue Center to be constructed at KES 5 million.We have allocated KES 7 million for renovation of Vocational Training Centers and another KES 2 million is for equipment meant for sheltered workshop in Rarieda,” said Ochogo.

Ochogo added that child protection and Youth development polices will be facilitated at KES 2 million each and is prioritized.

The department has KES 12 million for construction of Social Hall in Siaya town and another KES 5 million will be spent on fencing the library which is adjacent to County Commissioners offices.

In the current budget, 2023/2024, the department has procured and disbursed Assistive devices worth KES 8 million for  persons with disability.

“KES 110 million was spent on bursary where 12000 students from high school and tertiary institutions benefitted.
“A total of 9 ECD’s were completed, 11 New ECD centers constructed, while 8 VCT’s were renovated.”

The CO while presenting the drafts during Medium Term Economic Budget Forum said 11 ECD centers were equipped with furnitures and 17 VTC provided with learning and construction materials.

The Chief Officer at the same time noted that prolonged procurement processes was a major challenge inhibiting them from realizing the projects and programs.
