Billowing plumes of fire broke out in the Waruku area of Kangemi razing down houses in the area within minutes on the night of 1 May 2024.
The residents of the area helplessly watched as the fast-advancing fire consumed everything on its path.
It was not immediately established what could have caused the inferno as residents ran helter-skelter trying to salvage whatever properties that were portable enough to be moved.
At the time of reporting no casualties had been found.
Fire engines from the Nairobi County Government were also yet to make their way to the scene even as residents resorted to readily available options to put out the fire.
The Kileleshwa Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA), Robert Alai appealed for help from the relevant authorities to help quell the fire.
In a statement issued on his social media platforms, the MCA stated, “We are asking for help in Waruku. Huge fire outbreak.”
The residents also appealed to Kenya Power to manage the situation by switching off power in the area to curb the fire from spreading further.
Property worth thousands was destroyed as many houses in the area are shanties and the storied buildings are constructed close to each other.
The fire was reported at a time when Nairobi City County has experienced previous similar incidents within a short period of time.
On March 1, a fire razed down several market stalls along Waiyaki Way at 87, prompting the disruption of business activities and loss of property worth millions.
Similarly, on December 8, another fire accident razed businesses at the Carwash area on Thika Road destroying property belonging to furniture stores in the area.
