A somber mood engulfed Ndiwo village in West Alego Ward of Siaya County when the body of the late Sergeant Cliphonce Ajienga arrived for internment on Thursday evening.
Throngs of mourners lined up along the roadside as far back as Mwer Market eager to catch a glimpse of the funeral entourage which snaked its way from Kisumu to Uranga by road.
Sergeant Cliphonce Ajienga perished in the ill-fated military helicopter accident which claimed the lives of nine Kenya Defence Forces personnel including General Francis Omondi Ogolla.
According to local gossip Cliphonce, who happens to be a nephew of the General, was assigned bodyguard duties to the Chief of Defence Forces. Siaya County therefore suffered double tragedy in the tragic accident that occurred in Elgeyo Marakwet.
As the funeral procession reached the nearby Uranga shopping centre the usual ululation was muffed by the stern looks of the military personnel. On arrival at the homestead which is next-door to Ndiwo Primary School the military personnel took over handling of matters and villagers were told to mourn from a distance.
Proper burial ceremony will be conducted tomorrow (Friday) at the grounds of Ndiwo Primary School.
The coffin of Cliphonce Ajienga draped in the national flag has been laid to observe an overnight vigil according to Luo tradition at the doorstep of his mother.
